A comparison of urban with rural support networks: Liverpool and North Wales
- Author:

Compares findings on the distribution of support networks in Liverpool and in rural communities in North Wales. Demonstrates that while support network type is highly correlated with a wide range of demographic and social variables in both urban and rural samples, the nature of the relationships are not always comparable. Shows how cultural, migration and socio-economic factors interact to affect the formation of different types of support networks. As a result of a more stable elderly population, more old people in Liverpool have network types able to provide a high level of informal care and support.

Looks at the availability of family care, the characteristics of carers, the problems they face and the service support they receive. Only two-thirds of dementia sufferers living in the community have identifiable carers; the average age of carers surveyed was 65; dementia cases demonstrated a high level of dependency and need for supervision; and the level of input of domiciliary services was low. GPs are the key professionals who act as gatekeepers to other services. Presently available services are inappropriate for some carers and packages of care and support need to be flexible and better tailored to carers' needs.

Examines support networks for people over the age of 75, using quantitative and qualitative longitudinal data to show how the availability and sources of help in a wide range of areas depend on factors beyond the control of the individual. Draws attention to the significance of variation in network type and distribution of network type for care in the community, and suggests that these variations have not been given sufficient consideration in service planning.
