The authors report on a study of mentally disordered offenders held in prisons covered by the Wessex Consortium. It aims to determine their numbers and ideal treatment settings, and highlight implications for the development of local services. The findings reveal shortcomings amongst all professionals involved in the care of such offenders. The authors conclude that facilities, procedures and staffing in relation to mental health care in prisons need to be reviewed, and that a more vigorous and pro-active stance should be taken by community agencies to improve liaison with regard to prisoners from their area.
