This follow-up, after 30 years, of a large sample of juvenile clients of a St Louis psychiatric clinic, together with a matched control group, showed that those treated for neurotic disorders generally achieved healthy adulthood. In contrast, juvenile conduct disorders and antisocial behaviour were often followed by adult disturbances mostly of a sociopathic type. The study has influenced concepts of persisting antisocial personality disorder, contributed to the development of diagnostic interviewing techniques and shown the importance of longitudinal surveys.

Child and adolescent psychiatric presentations of second-generation Afro-Caribbeans in Britain

A clinical sample was used to investigate whether second-generation Afro-Caribbean children differed from other British-born children in their psychiatric presentation of vulnerability to risk factors. Afro-Caribbean patients were exposed to more socio-economic disadvantage but less family dysfunction. The ratio of emotional to conduct disorders was lower among Afro-Caribbean than among the comparison patients - an effect that was not evidently due to demographic factors of diagnostic bias. Most risk factors for emotion or conduct disorders had comparable effects on Afro-Caribbean and comparison patients. Psychotic and autistic disorders were disproportionately common among the Afro-Caribbean patients. Second-generation Afro-Caribbean children differ somewhat from other British-born children in their psychiatric presentation - a difference that has persisted over the 1970s and 1980s and that deserves more investigation than it has received to date.

Examines the prevalence and clinical correlates of sexually inappropriate behaviours in all youth treated at a tertiary care public sector psychiatric hospital over a 5-year period. Those with histories of sexually inappropriate behaviours had much higher rates of being sexually abused, and also had higher rates of physical abuse and neglect, behaviour disorders, developmental problems, and family histories of antisocial behaviour. They were less likely to have affective disorders. The hypersexual group had a higher proportion of females, and was associated in part with variables relating to sexual abuse and posttraumatic stress disorder. The more severe offending groups (exposing and victimizing) were associated with variables related to sexual abuse, developmental delays, lower IQ's, peer problems, and other acting-out behaviour problems. These findings underscore the importance of evaluating for sexually inappropriate behaviours in seriously mentally ill youth, especially in those with histories of sexual abuse.
