Reports on Awaaz 'Inner voice', a self-advocacy project working with Asian people who suffer from mental health problems. Based in North Manchester, it looks at mental health issues from a users' perspective, taking into account language and cultural differences. In particular, the project found that it had to recognize the role of the family in the lives of Asian people and to involve family members if that was the wish of the user.

Consumer and non-consumer case managers participating in a randomised trial of consumer case management were interviewed regarding their perceptions of consumer and non-consumer case managers, their work and their clients. Consumer case managers were concerned about how they were accepted by other mental health professionals. The consumer team maintained less collateral contact with other professionals and more interpersonal contact with clients than the non-consumer team. Consumer case managers did not show any greater signs of stress, diminished self esteem, or burnout than non-consumer case managers.

Although work and employment are important elements in the lives of people recovering from psychiatric illness, their access to meaningful occupation and paid employment is limited. A number of state and voluntary vocational rehabilitation schemes provide training or retraining for open employment but whether this a realistic aim in the current economic climate has been questioned. Using direct observation and informal interviewing, the article explores the interaction between the staff and trainees of one such rehabilitation workshop. The aim was to gain information about the role of the workshop from both the trainer and trainee perspectives.

Carers in East Dorset have real opportunity to communicate their views on services and influence policy decisions at Trust level. This article looks at some of the work undertaken by Dorset Healthcare NHS Trust to involve carers in the planning and provision of services for older people with mental health care needs and dementia. Based on interviews with two carers, the head occupational therapist and a ward sister, it draws on the experience of those involved, highlights the themes which emerged and contrasts the different perspectives.
