Mental health transitions: an integrated practice example

Four young people describe, in an intensely personal way, how transition from CAMHS felt for them. They discuss the onset of their mental health problems and their experience of transition to adult services, which they describe as scary, confusing, and ‘like falling down a cliff with rocky bits'. Admission to adult wards was particularly frightening. Young people and their families want information, joined up services, and to be listened to. Otherwise, being discharged ‘feels like being given up on'. The second half of the film is about the integrated Sheffield Health and Social Care Trust. The challenge is to improve transition when young people are no longer eligible for services from the child and adolescent mental health team at the age of 16. Young people were getting lost in the gap between services and many were not accessing services. The aim of creating special new services is to decrease the anxiety of young people and their families and to improve the transition. Services managed by health include a transition clinic, whilst social services run a peer support group and a drop-in counselling service. Staff and young people talk about the ways in which these new services are of benefit.
Keeping personal budgets personal: learning from the experiences of older people, people with mental health problems and their carers

This report is a summary of people’s experiences of using self-directed support and personal budgets. The research was conducted by a joint team from Acton Shapiro, the National Centre for Independent Living (NCIL) and the Social Policy Research Unit (SPRU). The study was based primarily on the experiences of 69 personal budget holders and carers, supported by the views of 40 practitioners and managers from local authorities, and 12 support provider organisations (including five user-led organisations). The findings are structured around the main stages of the personal budget process: moving to a personal budget, including access to information and advice; assessment, self-assessment and resource allocation; support planning and brokerage arrangements; setting up services and managing the personal budget. A final section covers key themes and issues. Whilst examples of positive practice were found, all the case study sites emphasised that it was still ‘early days’ for them in terms of the implementation of personal budgets, and both their personal budgets systems and front-line practice were still evolving.

This briefing summarises the experiences of people with mental health problems and their carers using self-directed support and personal budgets. It is based on a six month study, which also included older people. It involved five local authorities and draws the experiences of 69 personal budget holders and carers, supported by the views of 40 practitioners and managers and 12 support provider organisations. The briefing discusses: moving to a personal budget, including having access to information about them; assessment; resource allocation; support planning; arranging support; the role of carers; management of a personal budget and using support provider organisations; the role of external organisations and monitoring arrangements. Recommendations for implementing personal budgets are presented.

This web-based resource provides an overview of information and current practice to all those involved in assessing the social care needs of older people with mental health needs. It is aimed primarily at practitioners undertaking assessments, in particular, those front-line staff who may be the first professional in contact with an older person or their family and friends. The Guide provides access to the information and skills that inform sound judgements in the support of service users and carers. Its coverage includes: messages from research; current policy and guidance; service users and carers; the social workers role in assessment; assessing need; black and minority ethnic older people; implications of the Mental Health Act 1983; and interagency working. Also incorporated in the contents are practice and service examples, useful further reading and links to additional information on the web and to full text of official guidance and standards. This paper brings together the key themes and findings from the synthesis of six literature reviews on the impact of user participation on change and improvement in social care services. Reviews on older people, children and young people, people with learning difficulties and disabled people were commissioned by the Social Care Institute for Excellence (SCIE). Reviews on mental health service user participation and on general user/ consumer involvement were commissioned by NHS Service Delivery and Organisation Research and Development Programme. The aim of this work is to give an overview or synthesis of these reviews in order to provide a comprehensive, accessible account of what is currently known about the impact of service user participation on change and improvement in social care services. It will also provide a basis for SCIE Practice guides on service user participation.

It can be particularly difficult for parents with mental health problems and their children to get accessible, acceptable and effective support for the whole family. Different family members may present to different services and therefore it is important that services offer an open door into a system of joined-up support at every point of entry. This film is about one mother’s experience of seeking support for herself and her family. It sets out in practice how different services worked together with the family to provide the support that was needed.
