Assumptions tend to be made about the value of long-stay psychiatric patients living on mixed-sex wards. In this study the views of 71 patients living on single-sex continuing care wards were elicited using a structured interview. The results show that the majority of patients preferred single-sex living. The benefits and problems of surveys with this population are discussed as well as the implications for decisions about the structure and quality of care.

Black ethnic minority people discharged from psychiatric hospitals and their carers are inadequately catered for by aftercare services; their housing needs though pressing are also often hidden, according to a new study. The survey of 101 discharged people, conducted by a team from the School of Sociology and Social Policy of Leeds University, found many poorly prepared for return to the community, with widespread experience of poverty, unemployment, racial harassment and social isolation.

A reduction in the role of local government as the primary provider of health and social services, including community care throughout the 1980s and into the 1990s has been matched by increasing support for the informal, voluntary and private sectors. The shift of responsibility from public to private has been promoted through a movement towards a mixed economy of care, which advocates increased quality and choice for users, as defined by users. The author's study looks at how three user groups - people with physical disabilities, people with mental health problems, and people with learning difficulties are being encouraged to have a voice in service planning and delivery of services across three local authority areas in the West Midlands.
