Discusses the issues faced by fathers coping with the mental illness of an adult child. A preliminary exploratory study found that a group of such fathers manifested important indicators of emotional stress that were largely unrecognised and unacknowledged. They also demonstrated typical patterns of healing that were different from those experienced by their wives. Reports findings that suggest that fathers employ more isolating strategies, and suggests service approaches that might be more fruitful in responding to these serious needs.

Determines the relative contributions of early attachment and abuse history to adult attachment, depression, and conflict resolution behaviours. Differences between abused and nonabused respondents were also assessed. Results suggest the long-term impact of abuse may be mediated by early attachment experiences, whereas the long-term impact of abuse on conflict resolution behaviours may be considerably more direct.

- HILTON Claire
- Journal article citation:

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) may present many years after the original trauma. This article presents case studies of two elderly patients who both had experienced life-threatening combat situations and witnessed intense suffering during the Second World War. Marked distress was triggered by the media commemorating the fiftieth anniversary of the end of the war. However, it was found that PTSD patients often avoid talking of their traumatic experiences because of the associated distress. Concludes that without taking a military and trauma history from elderly patients the diagnosis is likely to be missed.

The study indicates the extent of the social and psychological damage sustained by those subjected to persistent stalking, and underlines the inadequacy of the current legal and medical response to the needs of these victims.
