Support for goal setting and attainment is a frequent component of social work interventions aimed at fostering client growth. This study investigated goal setting and attainment in the Michigan Supported Education Research Project, an intervention that provides support for adults with psychiatric disabilities to engage in postsecondary education. Results indicate increased complexity of goal statements over time. Interventions can influence the goals that are set by individuals. Because of its importance to social work practice, researchers and practitioners should pay more explicit attention to goal setting.

The assessment of client adaptive functioning is often an important component of a comprehensive social work evaluation. The Vineland Adaptive Behaviour Scales (VABS) are the most commonly used quantitative measures of adaptive functioning for clients meeting the criteria for a wider range of disorders in the USA. Reviews the development of the VABS and current knowledge pertaining to the instrument's reliability and validity. Concludes that the ability to administer and interpret the VABS is an important skill for clinical social workers to acquire.

This article analyses three examples of group work practice in order to examine the relationship between internal and external change goals across the practice continuum. Using the conceptual framework of the British model of self-directed group work, the authors explore the potential of social action groups to meet individual, interpersonal, and social needs. The three practice illustrations include a poetry group in a service centre for homeless and low-income adults, a peer support group in a recipient-directed mental health agency, and a community meeting group in a homeless shelter.
