There is a link between poor mental health and a frequent experience of welfare problems such as unmanageable debt and difficulties with housing and benefits. This is a summary of a report funded by the Baring Foundation, which finds that specialist welfare advice for people using secondary mental health services can be very good value for money. Drawing on an analysis of one such service, the Sheffield Mental Health Citizens Advice Bureau, and a review of relevant literature, the report concludes that specialist welfare advice can cut the cost of health care in three main ways: reductions in inpatient lengths of stay; prevention of homelessness; and prevention of relapse.
