- Authors:
- HALL Wayne, SOLOWI Nadia
- Journal article citation:
- British Journal of Psychiatry, 171, August 1997, pp.107-108.
- Publisher:

Looks at how the mental health consequences of the daily or near-daily use of cannabis over years and decades remain uncertain, and are likely to remain so for some time given the difficulties involved in investigating them. Nevertheless, there is sufficient evidence that its effects are neither as benign as proponents of its legalisation often argue, nor as malign as some partisans of continued prohibition claim.
Service provision for people with schizophrenia: I.Clinical and economic perspective
- Authors:
- LANG Fiona H., et al
- Journal article citation:
- British Journal of Psychiatry, 171, August 1997, pp.159-164.
- Publisher:

This article provides information of patients' current service use which could inform future decisions on service planning and resource allocation. Concludes that there is considerable variation in the services used by patients with schizophrenia and in the costs incurred in service provision. When planning services it is therefore important that detailed information on the patient population is available if resources are to be allocated cost-effectively.
Is the earlier age at onset of schizophrenia in males a confounded finding?
- Authors:
- JABLENSKY Assen, COLE Steven W.
- Journal article citation:
- British Journal of Psychiatry, 170, March 1997, pp.234-240.
- Publisher:
- Cambridge University Press
The finding of an earlier age at onset of schizophrenia in males compared with females, replicated across a number of studies, appears to be so robust as to support hypotheses about gender differences in the aetiology of the disorder. Explores the possibility that this observed gender effect might reflect other confounding variables. Concludes that the gender difference in the age at onset of schizophrenia is not a robust biological characteristic of the disorder. Failure to control for marital status and pre-morbid personality in male/female comparisons of age at onset may explain a large part of the differences reported previously.

- BROWN Steve
- Journal article citation:
- British Journal of Psychiatry, 171, December 1997, pp.502-508.
- Publisher:
- Cambridge University Press
Presents a structured review of the published information on the mortality of schizophrenia. Evidence suggests that schizophrenia is associated with a large increased mortality from suicide and a moderate increased mortality from natural causes. Discusses how although a number of possible interventions have been identified, there is not yet any reliable means of detecting any changes in mortality which might result.

Describes an exploratory study on the use of cognitive-behavioural treatment on people with schizophrenia. Standardised measures of psychosocial functioning, severity of symptoms, attainment of treatment goals, and data regarding hospitalisations were used to assess change over the course of 18 months of treatment and follow-up. Analysis of data indicated that the clients experienced considerable reduction in symptomatology and rehospitalisations as well as improvement in psychosocial functioning and attainment of treatment goals. Treatment issues regarding the application of cognitive-behavioural methods with persons with schizophrenia and suggestions for future social work research and practice are discussed.
