Reports on a study comparing the quality of life (QOL) of a mental health staff group and a group of patients with diagnoses of psychotic illness. The measures used were the Lancashire Quality of Life Profile (LQOLP), the Life Experiences Checklist (LEC) and the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI). Between group comparisons indicated substantial differences in objective QOL but few differences in satisfaction with various life domains. There were also no significant differences in measures of global well-being. Some possible implications of these results for the use of global well-being as an outcome measure are discussed. The potential importance of cognitive processes in the rating QOL is also highlighted.

Purposeful activity, accepted as an important constituent of quality living by many people, has not been well researched in relation to elderly mentally ill people. In a 43-bed nursing home in the north west of England, a small study explored initial patient, relative and staff reactions to a newly introduced part-time activity programme. The results highlighted the importance of a flexible programme of activities, coordinated by an appointed person and providing mental stimulation for the residents. The willingness of staff to become further involved as the programme expands suggests that additional staff training and specific time allocation would be needed.

How can we know someone is in pain if they cannot tell us? People with dementia may suffer severe and disabling pain if we fail to pick up the clues that could lead to assessment and treatment in many cases.

Examines what is meant by the terms 'community', 'care' and 'quality' in current mental health practice. Using their own experience of successful group psychotherapy project, they offer a creative reinterpretation of these core concepts which supposedly underpin the present shift towards community-based services. They argue for a reaffirmation of the mental health practitioner's therapeutic role in helping severely damaged clients to make connections - both within themselves and between themselves and the outside world - at a time when the drive towards fragmentation of service provision poses an additional threat to the precarious mental health of this client group.
The quality of life of long-term psychiatric day patients: an exploratory study of the impact of clinical factors on quality of life

The global quality of life (QOL) of a sample of long-term psychiatric day patients was assessed. Associations between global quality of life and background sociodemographic factors, objective and subjective QOL indices in a range of life domains and measures of psychiatric morbidity were explored in a series of univariate and multivariate analyses. The results suggest that attention to potentially remediable clinical problems should be seen as priority for services if the aim is to maximise QOL.

Defining and assessing quality of life

This article is a literature review, undertaken to have a fuller understanding of what is meant by the term 'quality of life' and how it is measured or assessed. The literature review shows that the term is not clearly defined. It is suggested that occupational therapists each have their own definition and may use the term too narrowly: a satisfactory quality of life means something different to all of us, whether we be occupational therapists or client. Suggests that it is more useful to find out what definitions a client gives to their quality of life when discussing the subject rather than trying to measure aspects of it by definitions of professionals.
