A report on perinatal mental health services in Scotland, assessing its significance and gauging where practice stands in relation to the national clinical guideline on perinatal mood disorders, three years after their publication in March 2012. The report examines key professionals' knowledge and awareness of PMH, and current practices in predicting and reducing risks and prevention and detection. The management of PMH is also discussed with a focus on psychological therapies; involving fathers/partners; mother-infant interventions; and pharmacological management. The report concludes with a review of existing services and service design. The key recommendations are: biennial update training on perinatal mental health for relevant health professionals; women at risk should be immediately referred to appropriate specialist services; psychological services should prioritise timely interventions for pregnant and postnatal women; the Scottish Government should ensure a nationally co-ordinated systematic approach by all NHS Boards to developing local specialist perinatal mental health services; and multi-professional perinatal mental health networks should be established in each NHS Board area to promote multidisciplinary/agency working, ensure clear pathways for referral and assessment, and to share skills and knowledge.
