This textbook explores the relationship between mental conditions and societal issues as well as examining risk and protective factors for the prevalence, course, adaptation to and recovery from mental illness. The introductory chapter presents bio-psycho-social and life-modelled approaches to helping individuals and families with mental illness. The book is divided into two parts. Part I addresses specific social problems, such as poverty, oppression, racism, war, violence, and homelessness, identifying the factors which contribute to vulnerabilities and risks for the development of mental health problems, including the barriers to accessing quality services. Part II presents the most current empirical findings and practice knowledge about prevalence, diagnosis, assessment, and intervention options for a range of common mental health problems – including personality conditions, eating conditions and affective conditions. Focusing throughout upon mental health issues for children, adolescents, adults and older adults, each chapter includes case studies and web resources. This practical book is ideal for social work students who specialise in mental health.

The Mental Health Foundation and Pavilion have developed a new Student Workbook to accompany the revised Certificate and to support the new N/SVQs in Health and Social Care. These materials provide a learning process, plus resources and materials to support delivery of the Certificate, providing underpinning knowledge for the relevant N/SVQs. Drawing on a wide range of print- and web-based resources, these publications take a holistic approach to mental well being and mental health problems, reflecting the diversity of approaches and perspectives in the mental health field. The emphasis in the Student Workbook is on independent learning activities, closely linked to the assessment requirements, that build on and develop the group learning in the workshops. Practical activities such as interviewing, investigation, reading and reflection, encourage students to take responsibility for their own learning, and to focus on key issues in relation to the value base of the Certificate.

The Level 2 Certificate provides an introduction to individuals who are new to their role and is designed to complement or provide a framework for an employer’s existing induction programme. The award provides a structure for induction into mental health work with the added value of an externally validated certificate for the candidate. It also provides evidence that managers are providing appropriate induction training. It encourages career development by providing an early opportunity to gain a certificate and enter the progression route into other accredited qualifications in the mental health sector such as S/NVQs and the Level 3 Certificate in Community Mental Health Care. This award is accredited as a Vocationally Related Qualification at level 2 of the national qualifications framework in England, Northern Ireland and Wales which means it’s been accredited by the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority (QCA) and is recognised by employers. In England and Wales the award will enable managers and care-workers to match learning from the award to the relevant induction and foundation requirements of TOPSS England and the Care Council for Wales/Cyngor Gofal Cymru.
