Dementia is a particular concern for service providers supporting older people with learning disabilities. Until recently little forward planning had been built into services to prepare for residents to grow older, and cope with medical conditions of older age such as arthritis, osteoporosis or dementia. For people with Down’s syndrome, there is a high prevalence rate of dementia as medical advances mean they, as with the rest of the population, are living longer lives. Little is known about the views and experiences of people with a learning disability who have dementia or are living with someone with dementia in a residential setting (Wilkinson et al 2003, 2004; Lyngaard 2004). A three year research project funded by the Community Fund in collaboration with CARE1 has explored best practice for people with a learning disability who develop dementia - looking at what enables people to remain in their own homes and communities. A key element of this wider project was a service user advisory forum. One of the things this research wanted this group to tell us was what people with learning disabilities know about dementia and what it was like to live with someone who has dementia.

Using a sample of 195 mothers who were veterans of the US armed forces this study assessed the association of maternal homelessness and clinical status, with measures of children’s mental health, school enrolment and attendance. Although maternal homelessness had no significant association with children’s reported emotional problems it had a profound effect on school enrolment and attendance. Mothers’ mental health status, history of incarceration and cumulative history of trauma, as well as children’s exposure to trauma and their self-esteem were the factors most strongly associated with measures of children’s emotional problems. The study suggests that preventive interventions are needed to minimize the effects of exposure to trauma, both in the community and at home, as well as family interventions to address both the mother’s and child’s emotional and physical needs.

Over the last four years the UK-based international mental health charity InterAction has worked with partners in Eastern Europe to develop and research ways for grassroots activists to influence policy development through practice projects. The work has been guided by the policy as process model, which was developed originally for international work with people who experienced disempowerment and disadvantage through poverty and deprivation. The authors describe their work in Eastern Europe, and also outline findings of a research project to evaluate the usefulness of the policy as process model to mental health activists working at grassroots level. The authors also look at how they have been use the model in areas of the UK.

Creative Connections is a new project, supported by the Mental Health Foundation and the Scottish Executive’s Artfull programme, a Scottish-wide research and practice development project to explore the role of participatory arts in promoting mental health and well-being. The programme will support 20 projects across Scotland representing the broad span of such activities: from community arts, youth and disability projects to artist-in-residence schemes, art therapies and projects delivered in prison and hospital settings. This article outlines the key aims and objectives, and the current evidence suggesting arts and participation of themselves are beneficial to mental health.
