Reports research in the USA which sought to analyse the knowledge and attitudes of social networks and social network interventions of eighty mental health case managers and case management supervisors. Findings indicated gaps in case managers' level of knowledge of social networks, and perceived obstacles that affect their ability to develop social network interventions - system barriers (paperwork, case load size, lack of case manager time), community barriers (stigma and lack of resources), and client/family barriers (lack of interest in social networks, a 'burnt-out' network).

Describes the intensive assessment of a man's challenging behaviour in the community and the interventions developed as a result. There were found to be many contributing factors, and interventions led to a marked improvement in the man's quality of life, communication and behaviour in the community. The process enabled community staff members to develop competence in supporting people who challenge, and allowed the man to remain in his normal environment.

Need assessment is an important component in planning, prioritising and evaluating care provision. Old age psychiatry is an expanding community-based speciality. It is important for community mental health services to be needs-led since this ensures better targeting of the limited resources. There is an opportunity for the developing of a needs assessment method that is standardized on old age psychiatry patients and measures need for the range of interventions offered by old age psychiatry services.
