This study addresses the following questions: what are the caregiving needs stemming from functional dependency of older adults hospitalised for depression and discharged at home; who are the informal caregivers, and what assistance do they provide; and how adequate is this informal care? On a sample of depressed older adults, in-hospital information was collected from medical records and discharge planners; and one-month post-discharge, a telephone interview was completed. Finds that despite high levels of involvement, concerns remain about the adequacy of the care informal caregivers are able to provide in the face of such need. Increased attention should be paid to the topic of informal caregiving to older adults with depression.

Reports on research which measures the criminal convictions received by people who leave special hospital and tests previously identified correlates of conviction. Concludes that the rate of conviction of patients leaving special hospital has fallen over the past 20 years; this is the case for crime in general and for serious crimes in particular. The change in rates of conviction over time for patients of different legal categories, previously thought to be different, is the same. The low predictive power of the variables examined here suggests that actuarial methods are of limited value in predicting offending in this group.

Mental patients with the diagnosis of schizophrenia, affective psychosis or paranoia, who were discharged from mental hospitals in Stockholm in 1986 were followed up ten years later. The result is an over-representation of criminality among these patients. The most frequently occurring crimes are violent crimes. It is stressed that the figures presented represent only an absolute minimum, since several sources of error have been identified, which are discussed in detail.
