Referral source and process of assessment: a comparative analysis of assessments for compulsory admission under the Mental Health Act 1983

Reports on research which compared referrals for compulsory admission under the Mental Health Act 1983 from three different sources: informal network, agency and medical. There were major differences between these groups, which were widest between agency and medical referrals. Agency referrals were characterised by vaguer requests, imprecise indications of mental health state in the referral, and were considerably more socially deprived and less socially integrated that other groups. Medical referrals were least socially deprived and had a higher proportion of women and those with children. Concludes that characteristics of medical referrals had a mental health orientation with traditional role stereotypes applied to women. The concept of 'social insecurity' by contracts, was most significant in understanding agency referrals. Approved Social Workers showed flexibility in their assessments, and the study demonstrated the significance of social factors in the process of assessment, and the need for wide skills in psychosocial assessment.
