Central to the government’s green paper 'A New Deal for Welfare' is the Pathways to Work programme. This offers new incapacity benefits claimants individual job-seeking support and referral to an NHS intensive 'condition management programme' (CMP) aimed at helping them regain the confidence to get back into work. The author talks to some of the people working in CMP schemes, their clients, and to others in the employment field who fear people with long-term mental health needs will be forced into job-seeking without adequate support.
