National Dual Diagnosis E-Learning Resource

This online resource aims to raise awareness raising resource about people who have both mental health and drug/alcohol use issues, also known as dual diagnosis. It has four modules: an introduction to dual diagnosis including definitions, impact and attitudes; mental health awareness and how it impacts on drug/alcohol use; substance use awareness and how it impacts on mental health; and skills and interventions focusing on the process of change and what helps. It contains links to key resources and documents, and there is also a workbook template to print off and work through whilst using the resource. The resource is suitable for practitioners, service users and carers, and members of the public. It requires a PC with sound facility, an internet broadband connection, and Flash player software. If you do not have Flash software it is also free to download.

This framework describes the values, knowledge and skills required for effective care of people with co-occurring mental health and alcohol or drug use conditions s (COMHAD). It is designed as an individual development tool and can also be used by service providers for workforce development. The framework is organised into the following themes: values; effective management; right care right time; working effectively and collaboratively with multiple agencies; working with families, carers and friends; and physical health and health promotion. It will be relevant to staff in mental and physical health settings, alcohol/drug misuse services, social services and the criminal justice system. The framework updates and builds on 'Closing the gap' and the 'Leeds capability framework.' It supports the implementation of Public Health England’s 'Better care for people with co-occurring mental health and alcohol/drug use conditions: a guide for commissioners and service providers on the ground.'
