Examines psychiatric morbidity following war-related psychic trauma, with a special focus on the depressive comorbidity of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and major depressive disorder (MDD). Subjects consisted of Israeli veterans who sought psychiatric treatment 4-6 years after having been exposed to war trauma. Concludes that within post-traumatic psychiatric morbidity of combat origin, PTSD and MDD are the most prevalent disorders. In addition it appears that PTSD, although related to post-traumatic MDD beyond a mere sharing of common symptoms, is at the same time differentiated from it as an independent diagnostic category.

Assesses clinical and demographic differences between geriatric psychiatry outpatients with early-onset vs late-onset depression. The following data were considered: age, gender, marital status, years of education, number of prescription medications and active medical diagnoses, presence of any comorbid dementia or other psychiatric disorder, age of depression onset, and number of depressive episodes. The findings support previous reports that people with a history of depression experience greater medical morbidity than those without a history of depression.

Examines the predictors of depressive symptomatology among caregivers of persons with chronic mental illness. Data were collected through in-person interviews with family caregivers of adults with chronic mental illness who were served by mental health case management agencies in the USA. The results indicated that insufficiency of overall social support was the most powerful predictor of caregiver depressive symptomatology. Higher levels of client behavioural problems and insufficient support from family members and mental health professionals related to the caregiving role were associated with higher levels of caregiver depressive symptomatology through their associations with caregiver burden. Implications for practice and research are discussed.

Discusses the shortage of research which examines the relative efficacy of treatments for depression among the elderly. Limited research demonstrates the utility of various psychosocial interventions in comparison and relative to control conditions. Asks why somatic interventions such as medication, electro-convulsive therapy, remain the treatments of choice among health care professionals. Examines various explanations for the limited use of psychotherapy for geriatric depression.

Reports on a study to determine the prevalence of mental disorders among the community-dwelling elderly in the catchment area of a psychiatry service for the elderly in Dublin. Concludes that depression is the most common mental disorder among the elderly in Dublin. Found that the frequency of anxiety symptoms in the presentation of depression may be a factor in the under-diagnosis or misdiagnosis of depression in the community-dwelling elderly.
