This article reports the results of a consumer-focused assessment of the accommodation and support needs of people with a mental illness living in Australia. The study utilises a 'pathway to stability' approach to assess the phase-contingent accommodation and support needs of mental health consumers through interview and focus groups with consumers, carers and service providers. The implications of the findings and research methodology for social work practice and research are discussed.

Quality of Life (QQL) measures are being used increasingly in the assessment of outcomes in community services for the mentally ill. This article presents evaluations made by an epidemiologically representative group of psychotic patients in South London concerning their quality of life while receiving a comprehensive range of community care services. Results indicate differences in patients' evaluations of quality of life according to specific services used.

The Care Programme Approach provides a system whereby the client is placed at the centre of everything professionals do. Describes the intensive assessment of a man's challenging behaviour in the community and the interventions developed as a result. There were found to be many contributing factors, and interventions led to a marked improvement in the man's quality of life, communication and behaviour in the community. The process enabled community staff members to develop competence in supporting people who challenge, and allowed the man to remain in his normal environment.
