Community care has been adopted as the principal service delivery strategy to various target groups, especially the mentally ill, in Hong Kong. The success or failure of community care services depends upon the input and support from the formal sector, the informal sector and the interweaving between the two. This paper reports on youth attitudes, acceptance, views on integration and perceptions of the ex-mentally ill. However, a substantial majority of respondents still maintain a "no opinion" attitude.

Examines the relationship between work status and quality of life and self-esteem in persons with severe, persistent mental illness. Goes on to examine the relationship between (a) demographic characteristics, attitudes toward psychotropic medications, and perceptions of the meaning of work and (b) quality of life and self-esteem in working and nonworking persons with severe mental illness. Results revealed that contrary to the nonworkers' fears, workers reported that work provided a distraction from symptoms and contributed to better mental health.

Discusses the results of research which aimed to identify some of the variables influencing public level of acceptance and attitudes towards people with a mental illness. A social distance scale accompanying a case vignette was sent to postal respondents. The vignette contained systematically varied residence labels (psychiatric hospital/community) and behaviours (disturbed/control). Results showed that social rejection was influenced by the behaviour described in the vignette, the respondents' judgment about the behaviour, and the respondents' previous contact with people with mental illness. The given residence label had an impact on only one component of social rejection and only for those presented with the control vignette. Discusses the findings in relation to current community care policies.

Economic analysis has only been explicitly directed towards health care in the last twenty-five years or so, but has now established itself as having an important role in the planning, management and evaluation of health care. A CEMH/PSSRU workshop was held to stimulate discussion on two questions. What is distinctive about mental health or mental health care? What are the implications of any distinctive characteristics for health economics research? The paper is the product of this brainstorming session which enabled them to develop an agenda for mental health economics research that focuses on the particular attributes of mental illness and mental health care.

Examines respondents' views on public attitudes and the nature of their contacts with organisations and individuals. Provides data on their level of satisfaction with their life in the community. Argues that these individuals still face much prejudice and makes recommendations as to how this can be combated.
