Report of a NISW research and development project looking at the interfaces within and between services for families where a parent has a persistent mental health, alcohol or drug problem. Services that have been set up to help the children and parents in such families are located in and administered by a number of different organisations. Effective collaboration, joint working across the many interfaces, and a focus on the family as a whole are essential if children and their parents are to receive appropriate help, advice and guidance.

The Composite International Diagnostic Interview was administered to a stratified random sample of 2978 individuals from four provinces representative of the country’s population. Six-month and 1-month prevalence rates were estimated. Demographic correlates, comorbidity and service use were examined. Nearly a fifth of the Chilean population had had a psychiatric disorder during the preceding 6 months. The 6-month and 1-month prevalence rates were 19.7% and 16.7% respectively. For the 6-month prevalence the five most common disorders were simple phobia, social phobia, agoraphobia, major depressive disorder and alcohol dependence. Less than 30% of those with any psychiatric diagnosis had a comorbid psychiatric disorder and the majority of them had sought treatment from mental health services. Current prevalence studies are useful indicators of service needs. People with comorbid psychiatric conditions have high rates of service use. The low rate of comorbidity in Chile merits further study.

This research reveals that some dependent drinkers have to wait up to 18 months for treatment, endangering their lives and perpetuating the huge social and personal impact of drinking. Treatment for dependent drinkers is less effective if drinkers are forced to wait long periods, plus, they often need to on drinking as much treatment is designed to help withdraw safely from alcohol. Nearly six out of ten dependent drinkers experienced delays in getting treatment for their alcohol problem

The main aims of this research were to identify the extent to which sheltered accommodation is already providing support and accommodation to older people with histories of homelessness and needs that are not traditionally associated with older people. It considered with sheltered scheme managers and their managers some of the issues raised by integrating these groups into mainstream provision and explored workers’ perceptions of the factors that seem to influence the success of these tenancies so that recommendations for future service development can be made.

The Mental Health Foundation estimates there are up to 20,000 regular street drinkers in towns across the UK. For many of the street drinkers inadequate housing, poverty, and poor mental health are related to the root causes of their drinking. However, because many of them do not fall under categories such as homeless, they are often ignored by service providers. Investigates why this is the case.
