This concise introductory textbook covers the biochemical, behavioural and social factors which influence the mind. It discusses all major groups of drugs which are commonly misused, including drugs normally available only on prescription, hallucinogenic drugs, narcotics, and “socially acceptable” drugs such as caffeine and nicotine. Alcohol, in view of its position as the most widely used drug of abuse in most developed countries, is considered in detail. The biological effects of alcohol, the problems resulting from alcohol use, and the means by which alcohol abuse can be controlled, are all discussed. The final chapters deal with mental health and mental illness. The book is aimed at students in the last years of school or on early undergraduate courses.

- Publisher:

Examines barriers to seeking mental health care reported by individuals in a rural impoverished population in the USA, by screening 646 randomly selected adults for depression, anxiety, and alcohol abuse. Respondents who screened positive were randomly assigned to one of three groups: (1) no intervention, (2) and educational intervention alone, or (3) the educational intervention in the presence of a significant other. Those who screened positive for disorders cited barriers to care at significantly higher rates than respondents who screened negative. Respondents who received the educational intervention endorsed several barriers at significantly lower rates in the follow-up telephone call (subsequent to the intervention) than in the original interview (prior to the intervention).
Psychosocial and psychiatric risk factors for suicide: case-control psychological autopsy study
- Authors:
- CHENG Andrew T.A., et al
- Journal article citation:

- Publisher:

Examines the individual and combined effects of psychosocial and psychiatric risk factors. Five major risk factors (loss event, suicidal behaviour in first-degree relatives, ICD-10 major depressive episode, emotionally unstable personality disorder and substance dependence) were found to have independent effects on suicide from multivariate conditional logistic regression analysis. Concludes that effective intervention and management for loss event and major depressive episode among emotionally unstable subjects with a family tendency of suicidal behaviour, frequently also comorbid with alcohol or other substance dependence, may prove to be most effective for suicide prevention in different populations.

This revised and updated second edition of this textbook provides a comprehensive introduction to the rapidly expanding study of psychological processes in health, illness and healthcare. Major theories and their application to intervention design and evaluation are covered in contributions from leading international health psychologists. The chapters of this edition are structured around the Stage 1 curriculum of the British Psychological Society’s Division of Health Psychology; an equivalent level to a Health Psychology masters degree. Each stand alone chapter provides a complete overview of a particular area but taken together they also provide a cohesive and integrated overview of the field. A wide range of topics are covered from health behaviours and interventions to psychobiological processes. The book is divided into five main parts: health-related behaviour; theoretical approaches to health behaviour change; cognition, emotion, behaviour and health care; psychological aspects of health and illness and lifespan; and gender and sociocultural perspectives. Each contribution begins with a chapter outline and a list of key concepts and ends with a summary, conclusions and discussion points. The book is primarily aimed at graduate students, practitioners and researchers.
