Evaluates the efficacy of an intensive-case management programme in extending community tenure and reducing rates of rehospitalisation for mentally ill out-patients in the USA. One sub-group of subjects was composed of all clients currently receiving intensive case management. A second sub-group, the control group, was made up of randomly selected clients eligible for intensive case management services. After statistically controlling for these covariates, clients in the control group were 41.2 percent less likely to be rehospitalised. Clients most at risk of rehospitalisation were ICM clients who received shorter intervals of intensive case management; higher levels of services per month; and had experienced brief, frequent prior hospitalisations.
