Looks at the increase in the number of patients admitted to a Regional Secure Unit who deliberately do themselves harm. Whilst there is a perception among rehabilitation staff that activity has a role in reducing the incidence of deliberate self-harm, this study identifies no correlation between the patterns of structured activity and the patterns of deliberate self-harm. This does not suggest, however, that occupational therapy is ineffective with this client group, particularly given the potentially addictive nature of deliberate self-harm behaviour even after problem resolution. The study identifies areas for further research, focusing on qualitative rather than quantitative study.

Community care has been adopted as the principal service delivery strategy to various target groups, especially the mentally ill, in Hong Kong. The success or failure of community care services depends upon the input and support from the formal sector, the informal sector and the interweaving between the two. This paper reports on youth attitudes, acceptance, views on integration and perceptions of the ex-mentally ill. However, a substantial majority of respondents still maintain a "no opinion" attitude.

The Queen's Speech at the opening of Parliament on 17 November 1994 introduced the Mental Health (Supervised Discharge) Bill which will seek to strengthen the powers of supervision for those detailed under the 1983 Mental Health Act. The debate over the legal control of people with mental health illness, which has previously focussed on confinement in hospital, now has to consider whether legal control over people living in the community, including supervision registers and supervised discharge, is acceptable. This article illustrated the issues involved in this debate.
