The results of a survey of long-stay patients in five psychiatric hospitals suggest that the majority of patients could live in the community, given adequate support. A small number of new long-stay patients will accumulate.

A six-month follow-up study of 132 former patients of a state hospital examined those subjects who became homeless and compared them with those subjects who did not. A quantitative and qualitative approach was used to document the process of homelessness that occurs after psychiatric hospitalisation. A set of policy options is presented that can respond to the special needs of homeless mentally ill people.

Results from three surveys of elderly people living in London and Essex are presented in relation to their use of health and social services. Level of functional ability and age were stronger predictors of use than psychiatric morbidity.
