Policy document providing a collective view of how mental health research should develop in the UK over the next decade, developed in collaboration with academics, research funders and people who have mental health problems. The framework sets out a structure to improve co-ordination and strengthen the focus on areas where mental health research is likely to translate into significant health benefit. It describes the impact mental health problems can have on individuals, its wider societal and economic consequences. It also explains the importance of mental health research in driving innovation in mental health care and provides case studies to illustrate the UK’s current strengths and the difference UK-based research has already made. In identifying the current barriers to mental health research in the UK and future research opportunities, the Framework highlights the importance of taking a life-course approach to mental health research; the value of involving of people with mental health problems; the need for securing closer integration of mental and physical health research to maximise research capacity. It provides ten recommendations to address the barriers and opportunities for UK mental health research. (Edited publisher abstract)

The transition from child and adolescent mental health services (CAMHS) to an adult mental health service is necessary for young people whose mental health problems are likely to be both severe and enduring. A concern is that some young people fail to make the transition, usually for reasons of service design, configuration and ethos. This review of the literature on the CAMHS to adult transition aims is to collate and coordinate as much learning as possible and to be creative about ways of putting the learning into practice. The literature search used broad parameters, drawing in texts and information from a wide variety of sources. The report is separated into the following areas: the mental health of adolescents; the nature of transition; barriers to transition; and planning, delivering and improving services for adolescents and young adults. Each section ends with a summary of the key points identified from the literature.

The Mental Capacity Act is scheduled for full implementation from April 2007. It provides a framework setting out who can take decisions in respect of those individuals who because of the nature of their dementia, brain injury, mental health problems or learning difficulties may be unable to make their own decisions. A consultation is being held on two aspects relating to sections 30-34 which set out the framework for research with such individuals. Research is defined as ‘inclusive research’ and includes social care research studies. Views are sought on the arrangements for appointing the ‘appropriate body’ that approves such research, and on the arrangements for people in longer term studies who agreed in the past but have now lost capacity.
