Investigates the main barriers to social inclusion faced by mentally ill people. Among these barriers are factors such as society's attitudes towards mental health, employment discrimination and debt. This article also holds mental health professionals accountable for social exclusion; arguing that they provide a lack of financial advise and fail to recognise their clients lives outside of their condition. In conclusion, it is asserted that change towards social inclusion will be realised if mental health services work together with mainstream agencies and organisations to combat discrimination, and for mental health professionals to have higher expections as to what people with mental health problems can acheive.

Home treatment provides brief, intensive care at home as an alternative to hospital admission. This article describes the work of the older people's home treatment team based at Penn Hospital at Wolverhampton, winners of the NIMHE Positive Practice Award for innovative commissioning. Their model reduces the risk of dependency and also helps older people re-engage with their families and communities.

The Mental Health Act 2007 passed into law on the 19th of July. This article looks at some of the fears of the Mental Health Alliance. The article highlights disappointments with the new community treatment order (CTO) and the Bournewood safeguards, which some argue does not provide sufficient independent safeguard.

Since 1 July 2007 the smoking ban has applied to non-residential mental health units, such as day centres. Inpatient units have been given another 12 months to implement the ban and residential units that provide long-stay (six months or more) care are exempted. The author looks at whether mental health trusts are ready for the ban, and if they are prepared to provide patients with smoking cessation support.
