Looked-after children have fared notoriously badly when it comes to school attainment. The author looks at a pioneering scheme at Barnet Council that has achieved success. Children are assigned distant champions, who are recruited from across the council and also from the councils partners. The champions find out what the young person is doing; what their potential is; what additional provision they might need; and what more can or should be done for them. All champions have sufficient seniority in their jobs to wield authority to influence a situation if necessary.
