Gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender (GLBT) populations are susceptible to stress-related mental health disorders because of daily imposed stigma and prejudice. Yet minimal information exists from the perspective of sexual minority youth about how to support them in managing a challenging social environment during critical stages of development. Through the lens of youth from two geographic communities in the United States this study examined what is needed to support GLBT adolescent mental health. The study employed inductive secondary analysis of qualitative and quantitative data gathered through Concept Mapping needs assessments. Findings include 61 unduplicated ideas for support across the two groups of youth; 14 primary themes emerged with 22 stated needs common among both groups. Areas of need in multiple service systems are identified. The importance of the supports for meeting youths' emotional needs varied between the two communities. Ideas generated represent youth ideas for improving conditions which contribute to disparate community supports needed to develop positive emotional and psychological well being. The findings are conceptualized with regard to psychological and physical safety; community impact on emotional well being; schools and psychosocial supports; and access to relevant mental health and health care. Discussion includes implications for practice and policy.

Despite the absence of data to inform Gay, Lesbian Bisexual Transgender Queer (GLBTQ) youth service planning, outreach initiatives such as community-based centres are being developed. This study used Concept Mapping to explore the psychosocial support needs of diverse sexual minority youths. The aim was to bring youth voice to the currently limited literature on GLBTQ service planning. A total of 20 youths who attended a GLBTQ youth-focused centre in Ohio participated in this two day study. Concept Mapping uses a qualitative research design employing modified focus groups to produce quantitative results. The study generated conceptual maps which represent the types of supports youths believe are needed to meet their needs. The results generated 58 statements categorised into five clusters: educating the public; policies; community support and involvement; individual responsibilities; and GLBTQ acceptance and individuality. Three primary areas for service planning were identified from these: developing protective supports; mental health-related supports; and culturally relevant services.
