Numerous studies have investigated the benefits of respite to families with a disabled child. Far fewer have examined the effects on the child and none have systematically compared information about this from different sources. Reports of behavioural reactions and views on distress of children attending respite care in London were gathered from parents, teachers and respite staff. Children were also asked for their views. Over half the children (54%) were reported to show medium or strong negative reactions lasting for 1 or more days by a parent or teacher. Reported reactions varied widely between home and school and no concordance was found between parents, teachers and respite staff groups regarding distress. Some children’s views differed from those of their parent or teacher. The findings highlight the extent of differences in perspectives and suggest the need for greater awareness of the possible distress to children attending respite. This is discussed in relation to factors such as the potential conflict of interests between parents and children, communication and behavioural difficulties, and the context in which the child is observed.

People with intellectual disabilities are rarely involved in research about their health, either as researchers or participants. This article describes how a project facilitated inclusion of adults with intellectual disabilities as researchers and participants in randomised controlled trial (RCT) research. The research study was an evaluation of the implementation of personal health profiles for people with intellectual disabilities and their carers, and was funded as part of a Department of Health consumers in research programme. It involved 4 teams of researchers, each comprising a researcher with intellectual disabilities, a supporting professional and a carer researcher. Researchers with intellectual disabilities and/or carers of people with intellectual disabilities gathered information through interviews with participants with intellectual disabilities and/or their carers. The article describes the context of the research, the design, how it was implemented and made accessible, recruitment, training and support, and research processes and outcomes. The authors discuss the project and conclude that the inclusion of people with intellectual disabilities as researchers and as participants was achieved through key factors including appropriate design, strong research partnerships and teamwork.

Argues for the introduction of patient-held health care records for people with learning disabilities. The evidence reviewed demonstrates that people with learning disabilities have more health care needs than other adults in society but receive less health care than others. The rationale for implementing hand-held records is considered from three perspectives: a consumer point of view, an analysis of how personal health profiles can help to overcome existing barriers to health care and the existing evidence. Describes the initial experiences of introducing personal health records in Bexley and Greenwich.
