Reviews some key issues for women with learning disabilities and those who work with them arguing that many of these are 'ordinary' women's issues which are exacerbated because they often remain unacknowledged. Services ignore gender more than sexuality leading to very atypical lifestyles for women with learning disabilities. Explores how women's needs around fitness and appearance, sexuality and sexual abuse, reproductive rights and experiences of motherhood and caring for others could be supported by services which were more willing to acknowledge that women with learning disabilities are 'women first'.

Background: Women with intellectual/developmental disabilities in conflict with the law experience childhood trauma, substance abuse and intimate partner violence but continue to have difficulty accessing appropriate therapeutic services, both within correctional settings and upon discharge. The aim of this study is to explore women's service needs and to critically assess whether the available services are meeting their identified needs. Method: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 16 women with intellectual/developmental disabilities who were in the Special Needs Unit of a women's correctional centre from December 2014 to March 2015. Results: Women with intellectual/developmental disabilities struggle to manage the impact of intergenerational trauma, exacerbated by issues of substance abuse and addiction, poor coping skills and minimal education, all of which impact their sense of well-being. Conclusions: This study highlights the need for increasing trauma treatment for women with intellectual/developmental disabilities, and emphasises the need for accessible intervention to facilitate coping, trauma processing and community integration. This article explores the perceptions, experiences and support needs of women with intellectual disability as they go through the menopause. Findings are presented from semi-structured interviews with 15 women with mild to moderate intellectual disability aged 43-65 years. Levels of knowledge about what the menopause was, when it happened, and whether it happened to all women, were found to be generally low. More significantly, the majority of the women did not understand the significance of the menopause on a woman's reproductive capacity. The women's experiences of change and transition were on a predominantly physical level, with some emotional effects, but little or no psychological and social impact noted.

This one year study of 23 women examined osteoporosis in postmenopausal women with Down syndrome. The findings indicate that the women tended to be inactive and they frequently had coexistent conditions. Eighty-seven per cent of the participants had osteopenia or osteoporosis in at least one of the three sites measured. The results highlight the need for intervention efforts targeted to ageing women with Down syndrome.
