An evaluation of Prioritise Me

This short report presents the findings from an evaluation of the Prioritise Me training programme. The aim of the Prioritise Me project was to support vulnerable people who are energy consumers in genuinely creative ways, and to support capacity and understanding for people with learning disabilities and/or autism. Prioritise Me aimed to provide accessible and interactive advice and training about energy use and the energy market where understanding was limited; to develop accessible ideas and resources through piloting innovative work with University design and evaluation partners; and to engage people to speak confidently to energy providers, giving maximum impact for vulnerable adults in South Yorkshire. The evaluation indicates that the rationale and initial concept for the project has been validated: the importance and effectiveness of co-production of materials and training in this context has proved itself, and the materials produced have been both innovative and useful. Further, it has been demonstrated that the materials produced by the project have the potential for much wider application, not only for vulnerable groups but for a much wider section of the public, and not only locally but also at a regional level and nationally. The adaptation of a Solution Focused Brief Therapy domestic violence perpetrator programme: a case study with a client with a learning disability

Re‐offending rates of perpetrators of domestic violence are high (Hester et al., 2006) and there is a need for perpetrator programmes to reduce victimization. There is no clear evidence for the effectiveness of existing programmes (Bowen, Gilchrist and Beech, 2005; Herman, Rotunda, Williamson and Vodanovich, 2016; Smedslund et al., 2011). A new perpetrator programme based on Solution Focused Brief Therapy has been developed (Bowen, 2013), and whilst in its infancy it has received positive feedback from services and clients (International Innovation, 2016). Solution Focused Brief Therapy has been found to be effective in the reduction of aggression and criminal behaviours (Gingerich and Peterson, 2013), and has been effectively used with people with a learning disability (Smith, 2005). This case study will explore the effectiveness of the new perpetrator programme with someone with a learning disability on their attitudes towards domestic violence and abuse as well as self‐esteem. Practitioner points: (a) Solution Focused Therapy for domestic violence has been found to successfully change the behaviour and improve the self‐esteem of a man with a learning disability; (b) Where children are at risk of harm, longer‐term interventions remain the recommended therapy; (3) The mainstream model for treatment was adapted by using visual aids and role play to work with someone with learning disabilities and these were found to be useful by the client. The effects of social and therapeutic horticulture on aspects of social behaviour

Introduction: Social and therapeutic horticulture has been shown to be a useful intervention for a wide range of vulnerable groups, including those with a mental health problem and/or learning or physical disabilities. However, there is still a need for additional research that examines evidence of its effectiveness. Method: This study analysed scores in four areas (social interaction, communication, motivation, and task engagement) collected as part of routine assessment during a programme of social and therapeutic horticulture. The sample comprised a heterogeneous group of participants and included a range of vulnerable people, predominantly those with a learning disability or a mental health problem. Findings: Scores for social interaction were significantly higher after 90 days of participation. This effect appeared to be most evident in participants with a learning disability. Conclusion: Social and therapeutic horticulture provides the opportunity for social interaction. Increased scores relating to social interaction suggest that the programme was effective in promoting such interaction and that it may, therefore, promote social inclusion among vulnerable and isolated groups. Abuse, neglect, and exploitation: considerations in aging with lifelong disabilities

This article reviews existing data primarily from North America, but including Australia and Ireland, for factors known to contribute to the victimisation of older adults with lifelong learning disabilities. Many “are relatively high functioning, engaged and happy members of their communities”, but some, are or have been abused, neglected or subject to exploitation, and the prevalence of such maltreatment is discussed. Existing data is also scanned for the treatments currently in practice and the authors suggest initiatives to build further on continued community living, by improving upon preventive practices and identification techniques. The authors discuss why there greater risk of abuse for those with lifelong disabilities and why these are underreported. Consequences of maltreatment are listed, followed by the issues and needs of family carers, such as the lack of long-term planning until crisis point. The authors suggest recommendations for practice, such as adapting mental health interventions, and implications for public policies on prevention and identification.
