The purpose of this report is to share ideas about self-advocacy for people with learning disabilities and those who are committed to supporting self-advocacy such as service providers, commissioners, parents and carers. A number of people with a learning disability and supporters were involved in developing this information and suggesting how to present it. The idea is for supporters and carers to work through this together and discuss the different ideas raised about supporting self advocacy.

In this film, we see how Scott, a man with autism and learning disabilities, and Marie, a professor with Asperger’s Syndrome, learn to make sense of society, with the support of colleagues and family members. Scott’s parents speak of the rituals he employs to cope with daily life and the behaviours that are triggered when the world does not make sense to him. Marie talks of the challenges she faces in learning the rules of professional communication and the techniques she uses to interact with others and manage her anxieties. She makes the point, however, that these anxieties come about because society does not yet understand people with autism, and disables them as a result.

This paper brings together the key themes and findings from the synthesis of six literature reviews on the impact of user participation on change and improvement in social care services. Reviews on older people, children and young people, people with learning difficulties and disabled people were commissioned by the Social Care Institute for Excellence (SCIE). Reviews on mental health service user participation and on general user/ consumer involvement were commissioned by NHS Service Delivery and Organisation Research and Development Programme. The aim of this work is to give an overview or synthesis of these reviews in order to provide a comprehensive, accessible account of what is currently known about the impact of service user participation on change and improvement in social care services. It will also provide a basis for SCIE Practice guides on service user participation.
