The survey found that whilst just over half of the Partnership Boards who replied felt they were taking forward some or all of these actions the majority were interested in receiving help to be inclusive of the needs of people with profound and multiple learning disabilities.

Definitions of old age selected by researchers should reflect differences in culture and life expectancy within and between developing and developed nations. Fifty-five years was used to denote older people in both the Australian national survey and a Victorian study. Consequently, 55 years and older has been used to denote older people in this study. people with a lifelong disability are discussed. A postal survey of 596 day programmes for people with disabilities was conducted, with a response rate of 28%. Findings show that only 19% of service users were aged over 55, and the largest subgroup were people with intellectual disability. Many older people attended programs that were not age specific and a typology of the seven program types utilised was constructed. Individualised planning, flexibility and choice were perceived as fundamental to a successful program. The location of activities in the community, maintenance of social relationships, and opportunities to develop new contacts were also seen as important. Little understanding, however, of the diversity of the ageing process or notions of healthy ageing was demonstrated by service providers, many of whom had limited expectations of older people. Challenges identified in providing day support for older people were lack of financial resources, knowledge and expertise amongst staff, and difficulties interfacing with other service systems.
Attitudes towards the sexuality of adults with an intellectual disability: parents, support staff, and a community sample

Attitudes toward the sexuality of adults with intellectual disability were assessed in parents and carers of adults with intellectual disability and in a community sample. An instrument that contained items relating to eight aspects of sexuality (sexual feelings, sex education, masturbation, personal relationships, sexual intercourse, sterilisation, marriage, and parenthood) was developed and found to have good internal consistency and test-retest reliability. Age was associated with attitudes, with those aged 60 and above holding more conservative attitudes. Parents and staff differed in their attitudes, with parents holding more conservative attitudes. This difference was the product of age differences between the groups; nevertheless it may produce some confusion for adults with intellectual disability unless it is addressed appropriately. Both parent and staff groups were less positive about parenthood than about other aspects of sexuality, however the community group did not differ in their views when attitudes towards parenthood were compared with the remaining items of the scale.
People with intellectual disabilities living in generic residential services for older people in the UK

As part of a UK programme of work focusing on older people with intellectual disabilities, the circumstance of those who reside in generic services for older people were investigated. Questionnaires were sent to 2570 residential and nursing homes in 53 local authorities across the UK. Five hundred and thirty returned questionnaires identified 215 people with intellectual disabilities currently living in 150 homes. They were significantly younger than the other residents, and were placed in these homes more often because of organizational change or the ageing/death of a family carer, rather than any changes in their own needs. Several potential indicators of a low quality of life were identified, including limited opportunities to get out, to access day services, to have contact with family or friends and to receive input from professionals outside the home. Attention needs to be given both to people with intellectual disabilities already residing in older people's services and to the prevention of further inappropriate placements.

Young carers in the UK: the 2004 report

The 2004 Report is based on data collected from 87 projects concerning a total of 6,178 young carers – the largest survey of its kind. 56% of the sample are girls, 44% are boys. The average age is 12. 84% of the sample is white; the largest minority group being African Caribbean. 56% of young carers are living in lone parent families. Two thirds of the young carers provide domestic help in the home; 48% provide general and nursing-type care; 82% provide emotional support and supervision; 18% provide intimate personal care and 11% also provide child care. The recognised incidence of emotional support has increased dramatically since 1997. Intimate care is most commonly provided where the person with care needs has a physical health problem or disability. Emotional support is far more common where the person has mental health problems. One in ten young carers is caring for more than one person. Overall, girls are more involved in all types of caring tasks, especially as they get older. The overall incidence of missed school and educational difficulties has reduced, decreasing between 1995 and 1997 and again between 1997 and 2003. However, 27% of all young carers of secondary school-age are experiencing some problems, and the equivalent proportion of young carers of primary school age is 13%. 18% of young carers have been assessed, an improvement on 1997. One third (36%) of young carers had been caring for 2 years or less; 44% for 3-5 years; 18% for 6-10 years and 3% for over 10 years. One fifth of young carers and their families receive no other support except for their contact with a specialist young carers project. Social Services support is the most common external service received.
Resource input,sService process and resident activity indicators in a Welsh national random aample of staffed housing services for people with intellectual disabilities

The aims were to: (i) explore the association between age and size of setting and staffing per resident; and (ii) report resident and setting characteristics, and indicators of service process and resident activity for a national random sample of staffed housing provision. Sixty settings were selected randomly from those accommodating six or fewer adults with intellectual disabilities in Wales. Nine settings subsequently withdrew. Information from the remaining 51 was obtained on resident ages, gender, adaptive behaviour, physical and sensory disabilities, social impairment and challenging behaviour, the number and working hours of staff, staff:resident ratios at different times of the day, working practices, resident receipt of attention and assistance from staff and resident activity. The sample of 51 residences was divided into four groups of 12, 13, 13 and 13 settings each, according to ascending average adaptive behaviour scale scores. Age of residence was associated with larger size of residence and fewer staff hours per resident. Higher staffing per resident was associated with smaller setting size. Staffing per resident differed across adaptive behaviour groups to a limited extent. Size and age of residence, working practices, resident receipt of attention and assistance from staff did not differ across groups but resident engagement in activity did. Considerable within-group variation was found. The data illustrate trends in provision over time. In addition, they give a picture of recent practice and raise questions about whether staff input, on one hand, and staff training and performance, on the other hand, are well enough matched to the different needs of residents at different points of the adaptive behaviour spectrum.
