Jobs for the boys - and girls

The Realistic Opportunities for Supported Employment (ROSE) project run by Havering College in Essex places people with learning disabilities into paid employment and supports them until they feel able to hold down the job. ROSE has an 80% success rate. This article looks at how the project works.

North Lanarkshire Council's supported employment has achieved a reputation for delivering full-time work for people who have learning disabilities. Since 1999, the service has accessed 175 jobs, and current supports 127 individuals who work more than 16 hours a week. This article describes how the approach taken by North Lanarkshire can be adopted by other authorities.

Chopsticks is a not-for-profit supported employment scheme in Northallerton that converts wood that no-one else wants and sells it on to local business and people as a carbon-neutral source of fuel. This article presents an overview of the enterprise with employs people with learning disabilities.
Merthyr Tydfil youth supported employment project

The Youth Supported Project matches teenagers who have learning disabilities with similar aged non-disabled peers to support and assist them to learn their jobs and become independent. This article describes the work of the project which gives young people opportunities to learn and grow together.
Colleagues' perception of supported employee performance

The authors investigated whether supported employees are perceived on an equal basis within the workplace by their nondisabled worker colleagues. Three types of social relationships were considered in a workplace context ("work acquaintances","work friends", and "social friends") in order to examine whether the types of social relationships that develop between supported employees and their coworkers may reveal information regarding the level of equality between them and the level of integration enjoyed by the supported employees. Semi-structured interviews were held with coworkers of supported employees and were used to determine the extent to which supported employees become socially integrated. Specifically examined was the progression from "work acquaintances" to "work friends" and ultimately to "social friends." It was found that although all workplace colleagues without disabilities considered supported employees to be at least "work acquaintances", some of them identified supported employees as "social friends."
Feelings about work: a review of the socio-emotional impact of supported employment on people with intellectual disabilities

In order to consider the impact of supported employment on the socio-emotional well-being of people with intellectual disabilities a systematic search was conducted. The review included case-controlled and longitudinal studies measuring outcomes for: (1) quality of life (QOL), (2) social life and (3) autonomy. While results for QOL, well-being and autonomy were largely positive, there was a lack of perceived social acceptance. The findings are interpreted in the light of methodological strengths and weaknesses. Implications for the socio-emotional support required by some individuals in employment, and directions for future research are discussed.

The peculiarity of this analysis is that differently from other studies it is performed using the statistics of the employment status of people with disabilities drawn from administrative registers of the Member States. The statistics from administrative registers show that people with disabilities are mainly part of those working age groups classified as unemployed or inactive; only a modest fraction is part of the employed working age population. Nevertheless, the number of people with disabilities in ordinary employment has increased and that sheltered employment varies among the Member States. With regard to labour market measures the EU Member States have been going through a shift from passive measures towards (active) labour market integration policies. The demographic trends and the resulting shrinking of the labour force in the future emphasize the importance of shifting from a passive compensation system to an active integration programme and making best use of the available workforce. People with disabilities can represent a significant addition to the labour force and thus contribute to economic production. Many EU Member States have made an effort to break down the discrimination barriers with respect to disability and to consider these people as an integral part of society and the workforce, but more integrative measures and programmes have to emerge.
