The Lamb Inquiry was established to investigate a range of ways in which parental confidence in the special educational needs (SEN) system of assessment and provision might be improved. This report makes five recommendations: Ofsted should have a special duty to report on the quality of the provision for pupils with SEN; inspectors should have training on SEN and disability; there should be enhanced training for additional inspectors with skills in particular areas of SEN; local authorities which fail to fulfil their statutory duties towards children with SEN should be directed to address the failure; to support decision making, inspectors should have available a range of information on outcomes for children and parental satisfaction.
Does the severity of disability matter? the opinion of parents about professional support in residential facilities

Researchers have shown that the characteristics of a person with an intellectual disability (ID), in particular the severity of the disability, are related to the outcomes of professional support. Hardly any studies have asked parents and/or legal guardians for their own opinion about the quality of support given to their child/family member with ID. Therefore, this study examined the relationship between the severity of a person's disability and the opinions voiced by the parents and/or other legal guardians of that person concerning several aspects of the quality of support received in residential care. Parents' perceptions of portage: towards a standard measure of parent satisfaction

Describes the development of a measure of client satisfaction with Portage services, the Huntingdon Portage Client Feedback Questionnaire, and presents data from a survey of past and present recipients of one local Portage service. It is suggested that this measure could be adopted by Portage services and used as an ongoing means of self-evaluation.
Learning to partner, disabling conflict: early indications of an improving relationship between parents and professionals with regard to service provision for children with learning disabilities

A questionnaire was constructed to analyse whether the high degree of parental dissatisfaction with disability professionals found in previous studies is indicative of the modern parent-professional relationship with regards to service provision for learning disabled children. The subsequent data suggests that professionals are beginning to address the need for clear and appropriate information and intervention, an acknowledgement of parental needs and expertise, and the effective role of parental involvement, whilst parents function within the role of service 'consumers'. Consequently, previous levels of dissatisfaction are slowly being undermined, although professional service remains reactive, particularly in terms of counselling and advice, despite the need and desire for more pro-active provision.
