A survey of 59 social workers employed in Israeli child welfare services is discussed in which participants were presented with two vignettes: one in which the non-aggressive behaviour of a learning disabled child is followed by a violent parental reaction; and another in which mildly violent challenging behaviour by the child is followed by a non-aggressive parental reaction. The professional characteristics and personal attitudes of the participants had no significant impact on preferred intervention mode. However, the levels of child and parental aggression did: challenging behaviour by a child was found to play an increasing role in preferences for more intrusive and authoritarian interventions, even after controlling for parental aggression.
