The purpose of this resource is to demonstrate the extent to which Active Support underpins the effective implementation of Positive Behaviour Support and the role it can play in supporting people with challenging behaviour. Positive Behaviour Support focuses attention on the development of a constructive, functionally informed approach to providing enhancements in the environment and the capacity of the individual. Consequently it relies on the development of other person centred approaches including Active Support, which aims to provide enough help to enable people to participate successfully in meaningful activities and relationships so that they gain more control over their lives, develop more independence and become more included as a valued member of their community, irrespective of degree of intellectual disability or presence of challenging behaviour. This document examines in details the key aspects that ally these two approaches, including assessment and analysis of the relevance of the behaviour for the individual, the development of an intervention plan, focusing on changing the circumstances and the environment, implementation, with a specific concern with the skills and abilities of mediators in delivering the support people need, and objective and rigorous monitoring and reviewing. Majority and minority ethnic family carers of adults with intellectual disabilities: perceptions of challenging behaviour and family impact

A health service in an English city was concerned about its support to families with adults with intellectual disabilities and challenging behaviour. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with seven minority ethnic and seven majority ethnic family members to explore perceptions of challenging behaviour, support and the impact of the person on the family. These were analysed using interpretative phenomenological analysis. Four themes emerged: (i) A broad range of difficulties with the adult with intellectual disabilities. (ii) Varied relationships with local communities in acceptance and support. (iii) Varied but largely negative relationships with services. (iv) Varied relationships with the person with intellectual disabilities, from highly dependent relationships with negative consequences to more fulfilling relationships. Families from minority ethnic communities were more likely to report negative experiences. 'Challenging behaviour' services need to be considered within a much broader social and community context.

More than just a quick fix? The potential of joint commissioning in services for people with learning disabilities

Joint working between health and social services has a long record of fragmentation and under-performance in community services for people with learning disabilities. This article examines the renewed potential for joint commissioning in the context of the Government's emerging social care policy agenda, including its commitment to partnership and performance management. Drawing on case evidence from learning disability and the wider academic literature, it identifies pointers for the development of joint commissioning in learning disability and argues for the monitoring and evaluation of emerging models.
