An account of groupwork undertaken with 5-7 year old siblings of children with special needs. The group was run by two social workers in a voluntary agency setting, a pilot study to evaluate the effectiveness of a groupwork approach as a preventative tool in work with siblings. Research has indicated that siblings may be vulnerable to teasing, bullying and be at risk of developing psychological difficulties. Adult siblings have advocated the use of groupwork at an early age as a preventive measure. The group was expected to focus on issues related to being a sibling of a child with special needs. However, in this particular group, it was found that the primary function was to give the group members time and attention which made them feel special.
