A guide for employers outlining the business case for employing people with a learning disability. The paper sets out the economic benefits of employing people with a learning disability and the evidence on their work performance and employment costs, looking at willingness and ability to work and reliability. It suggests that championing inclusion can help boost staff morale, which can have a positive contribution on the work output of an organisation. In addition, employing people with a learning disability can promote diversity in the workplace and can help a company to maintain a positive reputation for corporate social responsibility. The document also describes Mencap supported employment services, which provide tailored support throughout the entire process – from recruitment through to on-the-job support and beyond. This document sets out a template for how local people can go about changing things for the better for people with learning disabilities. This work is rooted in collaboration and focussed on the explicit aim of improving the lives of people with learning disabilities and those who know and love them. Key areas or themes have been highlighted as important by those we have worked alongside and engaged with. We have structured these into the following chapters, some of which are more expansive than others: a home; communication and staying connected; the right support; to love and be loved; effective voice-self advocacy/advocacy; employment and contribution. For each topic, the report highlights the findings that emerged from the engagement exercise, ideas that may be taken forwards, what good might look like and how we will know we are on the right track, who to engage with, and the next steps. An online guide for local authorities providing advice on what they need to do to maintain EHC (education, health and care) plans for 19- to 25-year-olds with special educational needs and disability (SEND). Although young people with SEND are not automatically entitled to maintain their EHC plans after they turn 19, some may need more support to complete their education and training and successfully transition to adulthood. The guide provides advice on how to support 19- to 25-year-olds to meeting their educational and training needs, such as a finding supported internship, access further education; access to funding for those with no EHC plan; supporting a young person’s health and social care; and including young people in decision making. A practical tool to help commission and provide cost effective employment support that also achieves good outcomes for people with learning disabilities and people with mental health problems. The review tool provides a number of questions and identifies data to collect to help commissioners gain an insight into the effectiveness of current provision and identify further action. The questions focus more on individualised employment support (supported employment for people with learning disabilities and Individual Placement and Support for people with mental health problems) and self-employment as the NIHR School for Social Care commissioned research on which the toolkit is based found these options delivered the best employment outcomes. Valuing People Now sets out the Government’s strategy to improve the experience of young people with learning disabilities as they move into adulthood. The Getting a Life programme was one of 3 Valuing Employment Now demonstration programmes which focused on how to increase the number of young people going into full-time paid employment. The programme designed an employment pathway that sets out the most critical things that need to happen during transition. The success of this pathway has led to the development of similar pathways for housing, health, friends, and community. These pathways have been designed to show what needs to happen at each stage of a young person’s progress through transition and into adulthood, using the principles and methods of person-centred transition planning and support planning so that they can have jobs, friends, their own homes and choice and control over their lives. The aim of this document is to bring together what has been learned about transition planning for young people with learning disabilities from Valuing People Now and Getting a Life. Each section describes one of the pathways to Getting a Life: pathway into employment; housing pathway; planning for good health pathway; and developing friendships, relationships and community pathway.
