Reports on a research study to find an intervention of benefit to bereaved people with learning disabilities. Participants in the study were referred to either external bereavement support or integrated support where the intervention was woven into the daily lives of participants and delivered by people they know well. Changes in the emotional well-being and outlook of participants before and after the intervention were observed and assessed, interviews with participants and carers were also conducted. Discusses the outcomes of the two interventions, looks at the finding and the implications for bereavement support services.

Investigates the provision of loss and bereavement education to carers of people with learning disabilities within a small community home. The literature that informs this study reviews the history of care of people with learning disabilities, theories of education and theories of loss and bereavement. The research approach is a micro ethnographic one. It considers the results of an evaluation of an educational session based on 12 individual needs assessment interviews. Results show increased personal insight as a result of the educational session with carers being able to identify areas of change to care provision as an outcome. Highlights the place and value of a 'small scale approach to training' and promotes proactive care provision around loss and bereavement to people with learning disabilities.

The evidence base for interventions for people with learning disabilities who have experienced a bereavement is sparse. This article reviews current theoretical understandings of bereavement and loss and describes the assessment, formulation and psychological treatment of a woman with learning disabilities with close reference to these understandings. A psychological intervention is described, which utilizes both psycho-educational and psychodynamic approaches.
How far are people with learning disabilities involved in funeral rites?

Many referrals to specialist learning disability services follow bereavement and loss experiences. Research and clinical experience both suggest that people who have not been fully involved in funeral rituals have delayed and/or prolonged grief reactions. This study in a multicultural inner London borough examined local religious and cultural practices following bereavement of people with learning disabilities. Interviews were sought with funeral directors and representatives from six religious groups to build up a picture of local practice, resources and knowledge, particularly with regard to how people with learning disabilities are involved in the process. It was found that most of the local funeral directors had little direct experience of people with learning disabilities. The religious group representatives who were interviewed also spoke of a lack of involvement of people with learning disabilities. A pamphlet has been designed for funeral directors and religious groups to give to families or friends of people with learning disabilities who have been bereaved.
