The number of children identified as having intellectual or developmental disability is increasing worldwide. Arguing that education systems may fail these pupils, and that they may simply need better teaching, this article looks at the potential wider use of a behaviour analysis approach, which has been applied successfully in the education of children with autism spectrum disorder. It discusses the education of children with developmental or intellectual disability, effective education, what applied behaviour analysis is, education of children on the autism spectrum, and behaviour analysis and the inclusive classroom. It concludes that, with training in behaviour analysis for teachers and related professionals, behaviour analysis should be applied more broadly to improve teaching for all children with intellectual or developmental disability.
