Multimedia advocacy for people with learning disabilities, a method developed by the Rix center is explained. Multimedia advocacy uses widely available technologies and software, such as Powerpoint and digital cameras, to help users create portfolios that explain what they are like and what they want from the outside world.

In the course of the work of the Mental Welfare Commission, service users and independent advocates have voiced their concerns about involvement of advocacy. They have heard of situations where advocates were excluded from important meetings, or were not given the information they needed to fully advocate on behalf of an individual. The Mental Welfare Commission has also heard from practitioners that they are often uncertain about what involvement the advocate should have, especially if a person has a severe mental illness or learning disability that makes it difficult for him or her to involve an advocate. The authors collected some examples difficult situations and case studies to consult with a variety of practitioner, advocacy and service user groups. They also considered the legal framework, notably mental health and incapacity law in Scotland and data protection legislation. It is hoped that the guidance and case examples will help practitioners to understand the role of independent advocacy and provide assistance when dealing with difficult situations.

The impact of self‐advocacy organizations on the subjective well‐being of people with intellectual disabilities: a systematic review of the literature

Background: A high sense of subjective well‐being has been associated with more prosocial behaviours, better health, work productivity and positive relationships. The aim of this systematic review was to explore what impact self‐advocacy has on the subjective well‐being of people with intellectual disabilities. Method: The authors reviewed articles focusing on the perspectives of adults with intellectual disabilities engaged with self‐advocacy groups. Searches were performed in PsychINFO, Web of Science, SCOPUS, MEDLINE and CIHNL databases, resulting in 16 articles meeting the inclusion criteria. A framework synthesis approach was used to extract data deductively based on the Dynamic Model of Wellbeing. Results: While self‐advocacy has a positive impact on all domains of the Dynamic Model of Wellbeing, negative impacts associated with participation in a self‐advocacy group were also reported. Conclusions: The benefits of participating in self‐advocacy groups on the well‐being of individuals with intellectual disabilities outweigh the disadvantages. (Edited publisher abstract)
No one knows: police responses to suspects with learning disabilities and learning difficulties: a review of policy and practice

Police safeguards for dealing with suspects with learning difficulties are “patchy and inconsistent”, according to new research. No One Knows: Police Responses to Suspects with Learning Disabilities and Learning Difficulties, a report published by the Prison Reform Trust (PRT) last week, noted an “increased risk of miscarriage of justice” when people with learning difficulties are taken into police custody. The report highlighted problems with inconsistent legal advice, lack of training amongst police staff and patchy provision of ‘Appropriate Adults’, which are in place to support and advise vulnerable people in custody. It said suspects’ needs are frequently not identified and that there is limited referral of suspects for clinical attention. The report is part of a wider PRT programme exploring the experiences of people with learning difficulties who come in contact with the criminal justice system. It recommended that PACE provisions be amended to place a duty on the police to provide legal advice for all suspects with learning difficulties during detention and interviews. It also called for ring-fenced funding for statutory provision of Appropriate Adults, and a common system across all police forces to screen suspects to identify people with learning difficulties.

This short report presents the findings from an evaluation of the Prioritise Me training programme. The aim of the Prioritise Me project was to support vulnerable people who are energy consumers in genuinely creative ways, and to support capacity and understanding for people with learning disabilities and/or autism. Prioritise Me aimed to provide accessible and interactive advice and training about energy use and the energy market where understanding was limited; to develop accessible ideas and resources through piloting innovative work with University design and evaluation partners; and to engage people to speak confidently to energy providers, giving maximum impact for vulnerable adults in South Yorkshire. The evaluation indicates that the rationale and initial concept for the project has been validated: the importance and effectiveness of co-production of materials and training in this context has proved itself, and the materials produced have been both innovative and useful. Further, it has been demonstrated that the materials produced by the project have the potential for much wider application, not only for vulnerable groups but for a much wider section of the public, and not only locally but also at a regional level and nationally.
