Residential provision for people with intellectual disabilities in England, Wales and Scotland

Describes the nature and extent of residential provision for people with intellectual disabilities in 1991 in England, Scotland and Wales. Data from the OPCS Census suggest that: (1) substantial regional and national variation existed; (2) overall, the level of provision was significantly lower than Department of Health targets for 1991; (3) the majority of people with intellectual disabilities were living in relatively large-scale congregate care settings; (4) the majority of residents were younger and middle-aged adults; (5) young black men were significantly more likely to be placed in residential provision than their peers from other ethnic groups; (6) young Asian men, young Chinese/Other men and young Asian women were significantly less likely to be placed in residential provision than their peers from other ethnic groups; (7) rates of employment and marriage among residents were markedly lower than for the general population. The results are discussed in relation to national policy aims and existing and future demand for residential provision.

This picture book illustrates the story of a woman with learning disabilities whose life is suddenly disturbed by an act of sexual abuse. From enjoying herself with her friends, she turns into an angry, aggressive person. She throws food and crockery, wets the bed and tears her clothes off. She has nightmares and finds it hard to sleep. She cannot stop thinking about the man. No-one can understand what has happened until she meets a counsellor. Through weekly talking treatment she becomes able to show what has happened. Through the support of her home, friends and therapy she becomes able to speak, and slowly the painful memory of the man fades. In the end the woman is able to sleep again and wake up to enjoy a new day. This book is aimed at people with learning disabilities to help them deal with sexual abuse. The meaning of the story is clear from the pictures, but words are also provided at the end of the book for readers or carers who want a ready-made story. The book provides advice for carers on how to use the book together with the person they are supporting.

Role of the registered nurse learning disability within community support teams for people with learning disabilities

The role of the Registered Nurse Mental Handicap (RNLD) within multidisciplinary community support teams was explored within a single county in South Wales. A survey of six community support teams included all members with a professional background. Each professional was issued with a pre-tested questionnaire that examined their perceptions of their own role and the role of the RNLD. The results suggested that the RNLDS were seen to contribute five key roles: client based interventions; co-ordination and planning of care; training; care management and health promotion. The roles and skills of the RNLD and implications of referral and record keeping methods were discussed.

Reports on a study examining the prevalence and associated features of self-injurious behaviour among people with learning disabilities living within Leicestershire. Concludes that self-injurious behaviour is a prevalent and disabling disorder among adults with learning disabilities.
