It is written as a working handbook for both family and professional carers. The resource outlines what clinical psychologists do, how they work and who they may of benefit to. It provides a useful distinction between the various psychologists a person may come into contact with when accessing services. The bulk of the booklet is dedicated to a series of two-page descriptions of common clinical approaches which may be employed when working with a person with learning disabilities: psychodynamic psychotherapy, positive behavioural support, cognitive analytic therapy, cognitive behavioural therapy and family therapy. The DVD attempts to orientate users to what is likely to happen when they see a psychologist. It mirrors the booklet in structure and outlines the main psychological approaches offered to people with learning disabilities by Birmingham PCT. In addition there is a chapter titled “Service User Forum” in which members of a service user advocacy groups ask questions relating to the practicalities of seeing a psychologist.

Picture yourself in a café; you find a worm in your burger. Would you complain? Of course you would! Picture yourself in your own home; your support worker is not listening to you or your needs. Would you complain? Everyone has the right to complain, but it’s not always easy and few people with learning disabilities do. Many people do not know that complaining can have a positive outcome. This is what a group of people with learning difficulties from Tower Hamlets set out to show in their new video complaints pack. This pack includes a DVD and supporters notes which is designed for groups and it helps people, over several sessions, learn about complaints and explore what they feel about making them. The group launched the DVD at Learning Disability Today on 31st October 2007. The group is going to use the proceeds from sales to carry on their work and make sure that more people know about.

Staff working in residential, day and domiciliary settings will all encounter learning disabilities, either in their own establishment or in establishments where clients are using the services, so they need to understand what is meant by the term "learning disability" and what they can do to lessen the impact of any disability. This workshop resource is designed for use with direct care staff and others who support or are involved with people with learning disabilities. The workshop can either be run in a single day or on a modular basis, and can be used to develop training to include staff in the statutory, voluntary and private sectors. This resource can be used for staff at varying levels as it will help staff to understand the wider service structures within which their own agency is located, and to appreciate their own and each other's roles. The video pack includes sessions on such subjects as attention, perception, memory, comprehension and coping with change.
