In the last couple of decades, progress in the field of mental retardation has been seen in parts of Asia, but has enough been done? One thing is certain, much more has to be undertaken before there is room for optimism. Some predictions are made about where the field of mental retardation seems to be heading in the next ten years in Asian countries. Only by becoming aware of the directions can social workers and administrators know how to cope effectively with potential problems. The trends in mental retardation in the 1990s are: protecting human rights; arousing public concern, putting normalization into practice; bridging the gap between research and practice; developing more employment opportunities; searching for a better curriculum; caring for older people with mental retardation; providing more quality education; and improving the quality of life. Possible ways of tackling such challenges are also discussed in the article.
