An independent mental health advocacy service was introduced in England in April as part of the changes to the Mental Health Act. This article examines the implications of the changes and discusses the challenges of marrying legislative requirements with the day to day experiences of advocates on the ground. It also reflects on the authors experience in how best to equip advocates to work effectively with qualifying patients. Details of an accredited learning framework and a practice guide are outlined.
