Supporting carers in end of life care: an introductory programme

This training programme and resource pack, produced by the University of Nottingham and funded by Marie Curie and Dimbleby Cancer Care, are intended to offer basic knowledge and skills for those who provide support for informal carers (usually family members or friends) who are providing home-based end of life care. There are seven sessions in the programme, which can be facilitated over a one-day course; each session contains extra content and exercises that can be used to expand the programme. The sessions are: introduction and welcome; caring and being cared for; supporting in practice; being a safe supporter; the principles of supporting; boundaries and exit strategies; and ongoing learning and development. The training pack comprises: a facilitator handbook; a trainee workbook; resources selected by bereaved carers; pre-course reading; a promotional poster template; and session slides. This training programme covers the management of medication in home care settings and is intended for use in training the trainers. It is comprised of a loose-leaf folder with 6 sections of acetates, staff workbooks, exercises, handouts (often with photographs), competency tests and additional resources, in addition to a CR-Rom. A glossary and a section devoted to frequently asked questions are also provided at the back of the folder. The first section, is in the form of a 101 page guide for tutors and introduces and details the training programme, advises on preparation and discusses approaches to induction, prompt, assist and administer medication sessions. The relevant legislation and laws in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland are listed.

Infection prevention and control are essential to prevent the spread of coronavirus (COVID-19). This video-based e-learning course for care providers in care homes and home care covers preventing the spread of infection and what you can do to protect both yourself and the people you care for. It will help to: understand how infections spread; learn about hand hygiene and guidance; manage the care environment; manage laundry safely; keep safe with personal protective equipment; and understand waste disposal. The training can also be delivered to smaller groups over a period of 4 weeks, as a module-by-module training. In total there are 10 modules.
